A bougatsa, good company & a slice of Greece in Amsterdam

By Vivi Margariti

Some travels gift you memories. Others — emotions. That’s what I found tucked away in a cozy corner of Amsterdam’s Jordaan district, where I didn’t expect to stumble upon Greece — and yet I did. Not just in flavor, but in warmth, smiles, and the kind of moments you carry in your heart long after the journey ends.

You see, not all cafés are created equal. Some serve coffee. Others serve comfort. Soul. Belonging.

I spotted the sign from a distance — “KAFENION” written in wooden letters, red shutters, and people chatting in Greek outside with their coffee cups in hand. My heart instantly smiled.

Warmth isn’t just a matter of temperature

There are places that welcome you like an old friend. Where you walk in and feel like you’ve returned somewhere familiar — even if it’s your first time.

Walking into Kafenion felt like stepping into a slice of home. Not just the Greece on the map, but the Greece of memory — simple, heartfelt, real. The scent of fresh coffee, the soft buzz of conversation, the embrace of strangers who treat you like family.

And I wasn’t alone.

Coffee with Laoura

I had the pleasure of sharing this experience with Laoura Maria Maramenou, a brilliant Greek woman who’s been living and working as a tour guide in Amsterdam for years. She carries Greece within her — not just in her accent, but in her warmth, her energy, her stories.

We sipped coffee, shared thoughts, laughed and talked as if we were sitting in a familiar neighborhood square back home. That’s the magic of real connection — it doesn’t care about geography.

A taste that feels like an embrace

Then came the bougatsa — warm, flaky, dusted with powdered sugar and cinnamon, cut into tiny squares. More than a pastry, it was a memory. A Sunday morning at grandma’s. A quiet “I love you” spoken through a sweet. A taste of the past wrapped in comfort.

This wasn’t just breakfast. It was belonging, in edible form.

Kafenion is not a Café. It’s a hug

Some places you visit. Others visit you — in your heart, again and again. Kafenion is one of those. A small Greek embassy of hospitality in the heart of the Netherlands.

Here, Greeks who live in Amsterdam, travelers who miss home, and locals who’ve fallen in love with Greek culture sit together, share stories, and sip proper coffee.

If you ever find yourself in Amsterdam longing for that simple warmth — of food, of company, of home — this is where you’ll find it.
