Friedberg: A Bavarian Gem with a Medieval Soul – A Journey to a Hidden Treasure

By Vivi Margariti

Some trips have a special way of making time stand still. Friedberg, a small town in Bavaria, offered me exactly that. At first glance, it looks like something out of a fairytale – cobbled streets, colorful houses with green shutters, and blooming flowerbeds. It’s a place that invites you to slow down and truly live in the moment.

A Stroll Through Time

Founded in 1264, Friedberg has preserved much of its historical character. Walking through its old town feels like stepping into the past. The buildings are painted in soft pastel tones, and flower-filled wooden planters add vibrant touches to the narrow streets. Every corner whispers stories of another era.

Some walls are adorned with artistic interventions – murals, figures, and visual surprises that keep your camera busy. I stopped at a quiet little corner to admire a painted figure of a monk, holding a book as if eager to share ancient wisdom. Next to him, a planter overflowing with red and purple tulips made the scene feel alive and magical.

The Friedberg Castle – Views to Remember

Standing proudly above the town is Friedberg Castle. Built in 1264 to protect the area from external threats, it now houses a museum showcasing the history of Friedberg through exhibits and reconstructions.

Climbing up to the castle rewards you with a breathtaking panoramic view. As I looked out from its walls, I imagined all the people who had stood here before me – nobles, soldiers, wanderers – all mesmerized by this same view.

Wallfahrtskirche Herrgottsruh – A Sanctuary of Silence

Just a short walk from the town center, the pilgrimage church of Herrgottsruh left me speechless. Its baroque interior, with painted ceilings and detailed sculptures, creates a sense of awe and peace. I sat in silence for a while, taking in the sacred calm – a moment of stillness that felt almost otherworldly.

Everyday Life in Friedberg – Tastes & Moments

After hours of wandering, I sat at a small café in the heart of Friedberg. Locals smiled as I ordered coffee and a fresh Brezel. People here don’t rush – they savor the moment. I did the same, enjoying my snack while watching passersby go about their day.

I also tried the famous Weisswurst, a traditional white sausage served with sweet mustard. With every bite, I felt a little more immersed in Bavarian culture.

How to Get There

Friedberg is just an hour from Munich and easily accessible by train or car. I took the train and watched green hills and rolling meadows pass by the window – a journey in itself.

A Destination That Stays With You

Friedberg touched me in a way few places ever have. It’s not just the sights – it’s the sense of calm, the genuine hospitality, and the rich traditions that make this town unforgettable.

If you ever find yourself in Bavaria, take a break from the big cities and let Friedberg surprise you. You won’t regret it – I know I didn’t.
