Sveti Stefan: The island jewel of Montenegro

✍️ By Vivi Margariti

If there is one place that perfectly captures the beauty of the Adriatic, it is Sveti Stefan. A small fortified island, connected to the mainland by a narrow sandy isthmus, that looks like it has stepped straight out of a postcard.

From fishing village to cosmopolitan resort

The history of Sveti Stefan dates back to the 15th century, when local fishermen fortified it to protect against pirate raids. Over time, it developed into a charming village with stone houses and narrow alleys.

In the 1960s, the fishing settlement was transformed into a luxurious resort. World-famous actors, models, and even royalty chose Sveti Stefan for their holidays – among them Sophia Loren, Marilyn Monroe, and Elizabeth Taylor. This is how the small Montenegrin islet became a reference point for global tourism.

The experience today

Today, most of Sveti Stefan operates as an exclusive high-end resort, yet visitors can still admire its enchanting image from the mainland or swim on the two beaches that surround it – one public and one private.

The contrast between the stone houses, the terracotta rooftops, and the turquoise waters creates a picture etched forever in memory. Whether seen from the coastal road or from above, the view is absolutely mesmerizing.

Travel Tip: Sunset is the best moment to capture Sveti Stefan. The golden reflections illuminate the rooftops and the Adriatic, creating a scene you will never forget.

How to get there

Sveti Stefan is located just 9 km from Budva, easily accessible by car. The coastal route itself is an unforgettable journey, full of breathtaking sea views and charming seaside villages.

Sveti Stefan  is a living story that continues to captivate travelers and deserves a place in every travel diary.
