The groom’s shaving ritual-A traditional wedding in Anilio Metsovo

In Anilio, a picturesque village near Metsovo where tradition remains deeply rooted, we were invited to witness one of the most symbolic moments of a local wedding: the shaving of the groom.

Inside the ontas – the traditional guest room – decorated with colorful handwoven textiles, the groom sat on a metal tray, following the age-old custom. Around him, friends and relatives gathered with laughter and playful teasing, as the groomsmen prepared to shave him with a razor. Young women adorned with flowers added charm to the celebration, while blessings and songs filled the room.

This act is far more than a practical step. The shaving of the groom symbolizes a rite of passage – a transition from bachelorhood to married life – and highlights the role of the community that stands by the couple as they start their journey together.

Once the shaving was complete, the groomsmen dressed the groom, put on his shoes, and prepared him for the big moment. Laughter, music, and heartfelt emotions created an atmosphere that felt timeless, as if taken from another era.

Anilio, with its stone houses and strong Vlach heritage, provided the perfect backdrop for this unique experience. A wedding here is not just a union of two people, but also a living connection to cultural roots passed down through generations.
