In front of Oslo Central Station, in a lively square full of motion, modern energy, and travelers from all around the world, stands one of the most recognizable landmarks of the city: a majestic bronze tiger, seemingly ready to stroll among the crowd.
Its presence is no coincidence. The sculpture was placed here in 2000, as part of the celebrations marking 1,000 years since Oslo’s founding. Created by artist Elena Engelsen, the tiger measures 4.5 meters in length and weighs nearly 800 kilos – a public artwork that’s hard to miss.
The nickname “tigeren” (the tiger) was given to Oslo back in the 19th century, when Norwegian poet Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson described the city as a “tiger,” symbolizing the harshness and fast rhythm of urban life compared to the calm of the countryside. Over time, the tiger became an unofficial “character” of Oslo. From a symbol of social tension, it turned into a beloved city icon that now inspires smiles, selfies, and curiosity.
This bronze tiger has managed to leave its mark more than most pieces of public art. Still yet alive, it reminds us that every city has its own identity – and sometimes, a symbolic creature guarding it.
A photo stop – and why not a selfie too?
It’s impossible to pass through Oslo S – the largest railway station in Norway – without stopping in front of the tiger for a closer look. Most travelers touch it for “good luck,” many strike a playful pose at its feet, and nearly everyone snaps the obligatory selfie, while others simply gaze at it in wonder.
Behind it, modern buildings unfold — with shops, hotels, cafés, and the departure area for Flytoget, the airport express train. The setting is vibrant and urban, yet unmistakably Scandinavian.
Traveler’s Tip:
If the weather in Oslo is kind – and on good summer or autumn days it often is – grab a seat at one of the outdoor tables of the café in the white neoclassical building of Comfort Hotel Grand Central, as seen in the photo. From there, you get a full view of the tiger, the steps, and the people moving through the rhythm of city life – a perfect spot to take it all in.
