Abu Dhabi is impressive. Modern and traditional at the same time, with skyscrapers that touch the sky, luxury beaches, maze-like malls, and of course, architectural wonders like the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. But amid the beauty and awe, you quickly realize you’re in a place with strict rules, where respect isn’t optional — it’s essential.
I won’t forget the moment during my visit to the mosque when security stopped me — politely but firmly — simply because my wrist was uncovered. I had to cover it immediately in order to continue the tour. It was a detail that might go unnoticed in our daily lives, but there… it means a lot.
That experience led me to put together this quick survival guide — especially useful now, as thousands of basketball fans are traveling to Abu Dhabi for the Final Four.
If you’re among the lucky ones attending the Final Four, make sure to avoid these common mistakes:
🚫 Don’t Dress Provocatively
While there’s some tolerance in tourist areas, it’s best to avoid very short shorts, backless tops, or see-through clothing — especially in malls and public spaces. Women are expected to cover shoulders and knees.
🚫 Don’t Show Public Affection
Kissing and hugging in public are considered offensive in the local culture. Keep the affection for your hotel room.
🚫 Don’t Swear or Raise Your Voice
Rudeness, hand gestures, or loud arguments can cause serious trouble. Even a small offensive gesture could lead to arrest.
🚫 Don’t Drink Alcohol in Public
Alcohol is allowed only in licensed places such as hotels and bars. Drinking or possessing alcohol in public is prohibited and could lead to fines or detention.
🚫 Don’t Photograph Strangers Without Consent
Especially women, children, or military/police buildings. Taking pictures without permission is considered a serious violation of privacy.
🚫 Don’t Flaunt Wealth or Behave Arrogantly
Despite the luxury, local authorities discourage flashy behavior or any form of public arrogance. Modesty and discretion are valued.
What to Keep in Mind:
-
Respect cultural and religious customs
-
Know the rules of the venue and the city
-
Be kind, discreet, and well-informed
Abu Dhabi is a safe and well-organized city. If you approach it with respect, it will reward you with warm hospitality, luxury, and unforgettable experiences.
Good luck to your team – and safe travels!
